North Sikkim, Nathula Pass, and a few other zones require special Inner Line Permits (ILP) for Indian nationals, and Protected Area Permits (PAP) for foreign nationals. Any good package operator will arrange these on your behalf — make sure to confirm this before booking.
The best time to visit is March to June (spring bloom, best visibility) and October to mid-December (post-monsoon clarity and a chance of early snow). July to September is monsoon season — roads can get difficult and some mountain views are obscured, though the valleys are spectacularly lush and green.
